After awarding grants to support capital projects throughout Wayne County for nearly 50 years, Wayne County Community Foundation has purchased a building to be a permanent home to the philanthropic organization. The building, formerly known as Larry’s Music, is located at 302 E Liberty Street in downtown Wooster. The sale was final in June 2025, with initial plans for renovations to be complete by July 2026. The organization is currently reviewing bids from architectural firms.
Building Selection Process
“As we looked ahead to our continued growth and long-term impact in the community, the idea of owning a building became an important part of the conversation,” said Melanie Reusser Garcia, Executive Director. “We knew it was essential to find a central location. After exploring several options, the former Larry’s Music building emerged as the clear choice — thanks to its strong visibility, potential to support future expansion, and proximity to many of our nonprofit partners.”
Funding the Project
Since 1978, the Foundation has been committed to serving our nonprofits and making Wayne County a great place to live – awarding over $121 million in grants and scholarships back into the community. During that same time span, the Foundation has strategically maintained a lean staff and conservative budget in order to save for future growth and development. They are now able to purchase and renovate the building without incurring capital debt.
“For the past 47 years, we’ve been incredibly fortunate to have outstanding landlords,” said Garcia. “From Bob Seiwert, who generously volunteered as our first executive director and provided space and operational support at no cost; to Mary Alice Streeter, who offered us space above the Wooster Gift Corner; and most recently, Greg Long, who has been a phenomenal partner for the last 19 years. We’re deeply grateful for each of these individuals and the strong relationships we've built with them.”
“We believe it’s the right time for the Foundation to transition from tenant to property owner. Investing in real estate in downtown Wooster is not only a sound financial decision, but also a meaningful investment in the future of our community. Property ownership strengthens our overall portfolio and enhances the Foundation’s long-term financial stability, allowing us to better serve the community now and for generations to come,” said Brent Steiner, President of the Wayne County Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Permanent Structure Reflects a Permanent Commitment
"As with many community foundations, the impact of WCCF often goes beyond what is immediately visible to the public. One of the main reasons for acquiring this building is to enhance our visibility. While the effects of our grants may not always be visible, our building will serve as a constant reminder to the community of who we are and the work we do. We believe this increased presence will foster stronger support from both existing and new donors,” says Adam Briggs, Trustee and Real Estate Committee Member.
